Gilmour Space Expands Australian Satellite Capability with ElaraSat Multi-Mission Platform

Gilmour Space Technologies, an Australian space company focused on launch vehicles, satellite platforms, and orbital infrastructure, is advancing its ElaraSat satellite platform to support commercial, civil, and defence missions in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). Designed and built in Australia, the platform is intended to provide a modular spacecraft architecture that simplifies payload integration and accelerates mission deployment workflows.

The ElaraSat platform is engineered as a modular 100-kg class satellite bus designed for multi-mission operations across Earth observation, communications, scientific research, environmental monitoring, and defence applications. According to Gilmour Space, the platform architecture is designed to provide customers with a ready-to-integrate spacecraft solution while reducing the complexity associated with developing custom satellite buses. ElaraSat MMS-1 was launched in June 2025 aboard a Falcon 9 rideshare mission and is currently operating in orbit. ElaraSat MMS-2 is slated to launch later this year, further building their on-orbit heritage.

A major technical focus of ElaraSat is the integration of standardized spacecraft subsystems within a scalable platform architecture. The satellite incorporates onboard power systems, thermal management, attitude determination and control systems (ADCS), communications infrastructure, onboard computing and payload integration interfaces required for autonomous orbital operations and flexible mission deployment.

The platform is designed to support adaptable payload accommodation across multiple mission categories while enabling streamlined spacecraft integration and operational readiness. Gilmour Space states that the modular architecture allows customers to focus on payload development and mission applications rather than full spacecraft subsystem development. ElaraSat is also designed for compatibility with multiple launch vehicles, including Gilmour Space’s Eris orbital rocket, supporting the company’s broader strategy of establishing an integrated sovereign Australian launch and satellite ecosystem. The company combines launch vehicle development, satellite manufacturing, and launch infrastructure capabilities to support end-to-end orbital mission operations from Australia.

A key milestone for the platform was the deployment of ElaraSat MMS-1, which validated core satellite bus capabilities and established on-orbit operational heritage for the platform. The mission demonstrated spacecraft commissioning capability along with S-band communications and X-band downlink operations for future mission support and payload integration activities. Through the ElaraSat program, Gilmour Space aims to strengthen sovereign Australian satellite capability while supporting more flexible and accessible orbital missions for commercial, research and government customers.
