Amazon Leo has entered the construction sector through a new agreement with Hitachi Construction Machinery, as Amazon prepares for the initial rollout of its low Earth orbit satellite internet service later this year.
The companies announced on Wednesday that Hitachi Construction Machinery will begin deploying portable Amazon Leo satellite terminals at construction sites in the United Kingdom and Germany during 2026. The satellite connectivity is designed to improve communications at remote job sites where conventional network coverage may be limited.
Satellite Connectivity for Construction Sites
Hitachi Construction Machinery plans to use the Amazon Leo network to transmit machine health reports, download service manuals in the field, receive real-time maintenance alerts and upload inspection reports directly from construction sites.
The connectivity is expected to improve access to operational data while reducing delays caused by unreliable terrestrial communications, particularly at remote locations.
Integration With AWS Platform
The project also expands the collaboration between the companies through Amazon Web Services (AWS). Hitachi Construction Machinery already operates its global service network on AWS, where machine operation and maintenance information is collected and analyzed.
By connecting construction equipment through the Amazon Leo satellite network, machines operating in isolated areas will be able to send operational data directly to the AWS cloud, supporting more consistent fleet monitoring.
Supporting Future AI-Based Maintenance
The companies said the enhanced connectivity could pave the way for AI-driven predictive maintenance by enabling continuous collection and analysis of machine operating data.
“Our mission is to maximize customers’ machine uptime while minimizing total cost of ownership for our customers. Signing this agreement with Amazon Leo represents a major step toward verifying our vision of connecting all construction sites through communication—regardless of location. With reliable satellite connectivity, we can deliver high-quality ConSite services at every job site in the world and, in the future, enable real-time AI analysis of operation data to further benefit our customers,” Hitachi Construction Machinery said in a statement.
Amazon Leo is preparing for its first commercial service rollout later this year. The satellite constellation currently comprises 367 satellites following its latest launch by Arianespace last week, as Amazon continues expanding its network for enterprise and commercial users.
