DARPA Awards Space Kinetic Multi-Million Dollar Contract to Advance Space-Based Missile Defense Architecture

U.S. aerospace startup Space Kinetic has secured a multi-million dollar contract from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to accelerate development of its asymmetric, space-based missile defense architecture, the company said.

The award marks a significant step for the venture-backed firm as it works to mature a “one-to-many” defensive constellation designed to counter advanced missile threats and support broader space operations.

Space Kinetic said the funding will be used to refine mission architecture and upgrade key hardware elements that support both missile defense and space superiority missions — a priority area for U.S. national security planners facing increasingly complex global threats.

Co-founder Ryan Sullivan said the company aims to reshape how the U.S. approaches defensive space capabilities.
“Space Kinetic is committed to building a new paradigm for space operations — one that provides the United States with technological surprise across our most urgent national security priorities in the domain,” he said. “We’re thrilled to be working with DARPA on this effort and look forward to building on the foundation we have set on asymmetric space-based missile defense over the past 18 months.”

Space Kinetic develops systems intended to break from traditional “one-to-one” defense concepts by offering scalable architectures better suited for contested and rapidly evolving threat environments. The company says its approach aims to lower both operational and economic barriers that have slowed deployment of next-generation space defense capabilities.

DARPA has not disclosed additional contract details, but the award underscores growing U.S. interest in distributing defensive capabilities across larger constellations to improve resilience and reduce vulnerability.
